  14. <p>     DIED. Eugene Fodor, 85, peripatetic creator of travel
  15. guides; in Torrington, Conn. A Hungarian-born free-lance
  16. writer, Fodor published his first book, 1936 On the Continent,
  17. a guide to Europe for British travelers, and became a U.S.
  18. citizen during World War II. Fodor invited readers not only to
  19. see the sights but also to immerse themselves in foreign
  20. cultures' different mores. More than 3 million Fodor guides,
  21. covering 93 countries, encompassing 128 titles and in several
  22. languages, are sold worldwide each year.
